Exercises: Warm up Stretch

This exercise is basically a more advance version of this one but we’re going to increase the stretch.

The original exercise used these four shapes in sequence (either played up and down as individual notes, or as chords- it doesn’t matter):

e------------
B-8--8--5--5-
G-7--6--6--7-
D-6--7--7--6-
A-5--5--8--8-
E------------

The exercise tabbed is to be played in 5th position (although feel free to move it to where it comfortable and start there)- this means that your first finger plays everything on the 5th fret, 2nd finger on the 6th fret etc.

So that’s where we’re going to start…but…we’re going to stretch things out a little so that we end up with this:

e------------
B-8--8--4--4-
G-7--6--6--7-
D-6--7--7--6-
A-4--4--8--8-
E------------

Well, that’s the start of it. All the “5′s” have become “4′s”- basically moving your index finger down a fret to create a stretch in between your first and second fingers. After you’ve played all four new shapes, it’s time to move the next finger:

e------------
B-8--8--4--4-
G-7--5--5--7-
D-5--7--7--5-
A-4--4--8--8-
E------------

Now the stretch will be between your second and third fingers (fret five to fret 7). The final variation on this is created by (yep, you guessed it!) moving your third finger down a fret.

You should now have this:

e------------
B-8--8--4--4-
G-6--5--5--6-
D-5--6--6--5-
A-4--4--8--8-
E------------

…with the final stretch between your third and fourth fingers (the 6th to the 8th fret in the example). Of course, you could just stretch the whole thing and play this:

e------------
B-11-11--5--5-
G-9--7--7--9-
D-7--9--9--7-
A-5--5--11-11-
E------------

…but then you just might be crazy…
