Guitar Chords and Licks: Re-cap

So, this is the last part of the “Guitar Chords and Licks” series. If you’ve read through each of these articles, you should now know:

  • The notes in each Scale
  • The chords that can be constructed from each scale
  • The chord progressions that you can solo over with each scale
  • Some of the good ways to use each scale, and some licks for each

Summary

  • The Major Scale is what forms the basis for the “major key”- and so much of music theory is based on it!
  • The Major and Minor pentatonic scales are like “stripped down” versions of larger scales and they’re great for soloing!
  • You can add specific notes to the pentatonic shapes to create the Blues Scale, or the impressions of other scales (e.g. the Natural Minor.
  • The Harmonic Minor scale is used for Neoclassical Rock and Metal \m/
  • The Melodic Minor scale is used mostly for Jazz.

I hope this series has been helpful! If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below.
