Guitar Chords: Suspended 4

OK, next in this series is the mysterious “sus” chord, also known as a “sus4″. The major difference between these chords and others is that Suspended chords have no third (so are therefore neither major, nor minor).

As you may have guessed from the name, the third in sus4 chords is replaced by a 4th (which lives one fret higher than a major third). In the following diagrams, I have marked the 4th in blue (the root note is still in red). If you read the previous article in this series, you’ll be know that to create sus4 chords from a root note that’s not in the diagram below, you’ll need to turn these shapes into a barre chord. The best two shapes to do this with are the E and A shapes, just like with major and minor chords.
