Guitar Fail

This is specifically dedicated to those of you who think it’s a good idea to show off on stage. Remember, the things that make a good stage performance include: atmosphere, communication, and the music (of course). I don’t know why this guy thought that jumping off his amp was a good idea!

Not only does he injure himself; you may also notice that he pulls the lead to the singers mircophone and knocks his amp over. Clever.

The clip is taken from Fail Blog, and is a perfect example of what not to do.

Nervousness

One thing that we all have to deal with on stage is nervousness, or “stage-fright”, and trust me, if you’re nervous you are less able to pull off on the spot “improvised” moves designed to show off- no matter how good you think you are!

Everyone can make mistakes, and you really should be focusing your energy on relaxing and doing what you need to do. The guy in the second video here should have payed more attention to the latter (warning, this video is hilarious).

Improvising

So what do you do if you find yourself making a “Smelcome” style mistake? Well, at a live gig you wont be able to edit it out. Instead? Keep going. Think about it: if the presenter in the above video had just continued, who would have noticed?

People are more likely to assume that they’ve misheard than assume you’ve made a mistake- especially if it’s only for a split second. It’s even better if you are confident enough to improvise over the mistake to cover it- but this is (importantly) different to “showing off”.

Conclusion

So, what am I getting at here? My point is, don’t try and show off where it’s not needed and you’re less likely to look stupid and make a mistake. However, if you do happen to make a mistake, don’t worry about it! Learn to take yourself less seriously and have fun!
