How to Play Bass: Syncopation

Next in the “How to Play Bass” series, we’re looking at syncopation. What is syncopation? Basically, it involves playing (or- more specifically “emphasising notes”) that aren’t on the beat. Obviously this isn’t the same as being “out of time” as the notes are “in time”, but they are just played with a different accent.

Normally, the notes that fall on the regular beats of the music are stronger, (louder, or “accented”); syncopation is when you start to mess around with that idea- accenting the notes that fall in between the beats. This makes the notes “jump out” or feel a bit “unexpected” as you’re messing with the normal order of things.

I explain it more in this video (with demonstration):

Syncopation is a great way to create interest and tension in your bass playing- although remember you also have to fit in with the music! Start playing “off beat” too much without everybody else and you’ll stick out like a sore thumb!

I hope this inspires you to include this technique in your own playing!
Rob.
