Guitar Lessons: How to Solo

This post is about this lesson, where I talk about how to improvise. No, I’m not talking about “what scale should I use over this?” or “what mode am I in?”! I’m talking about actual “improvisation”. Basically: How to make stuff up.

If you’ve already seen the above lesson then this post probably isn’t for you, because here I’m going to list the videos I’ve done on improvisation so far. The logic behind it goes something like: as I create more videos on this subject I’ll be able to update them here and then they’re all in one place.

How to Solo (part 1)

This first video is about my technique of “humming along”. No matter what you say, you’ll be able to hum a tune! Anyway, practice makes perfect…

How to Solo (part 2)

The second video in this series is about spontaneity, and being able to keep the groove going with no “gaps”. You know what I’m talking about: when you’re taking so long to think about the next note that it’s now too late to play it…

Using the above exercise should start to get you over the stage of being so overly critical of every note that you end up not playing at all! You’ll eventually learn to “just do it”, rather than spend ages deciding about it.

I’ll update this post with more videos as they come, so please subscribe.
